Fallen Over Book Reviews

Just a mom who finds reading and reviewing to be enjoyable between housework, and raising my two minions. I enjoy pretty much everything I can get my hands on except bio's and historical. My main go to books are horror, dystopian, murder and the paranormal.

Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

I remember reading this too K when he was little so when I saw it on Overdrive I decided to read it to A. She loved the rhyming within the book and decided she wouldn't eat green eggs and ham because that is gross. This is a classic story to read to all. Love Dr. Seuss and his books.

ARC Review: The Woman in the White Mask

The Woman in the White Mask (The Soren Chase Series, Book Three) - Rob Blackwell

I received this ARC to give an honest review.

This was a great story that we get to learn how the Pretender we know as Soren Chase really came too be. Soren Chase gets his memory back in an unusual way. The Woman in the White Mask is Kuchisake-onna, she is not a woman you want too meet, but somehow Soren keeps seeing her time and time again. Will he even survive because it seems she is not there for fun.

While Soren is dealing with his memory issues, he is also trying to stop a bunch of teenagers from raising demons. With the help of Sara, Friday and hopefully the arm the ritual can be stopped. Though the question is will the 13 succeed. I think this is my favorite book out of the Soren Chase books. Just because so many questions were answered. I also liked how Kuchisake-onna played a part, as soon as I saw her name I went to searching for information to her existence. What I found was fascinating.

So much is answered in this book and the bit of the cliffhanger at the end has me wondering what is the plans that the council has. It just seems to get better and better.

Review: Puck

Puck (A Twisted Lit Novel) - Kim Askew, Amy Helmes

I received this book to give an honest review.

I was very impressed with this book more than I thought I would be. Puck is a young teenager who has been bounced around from foster home to foster home. So when she is finally wanted by her new mom Paula Puck tries to screw up that relationship because she just knows that she will be sent back.

Paula doesn't give up on her wants to send her to a place called DreamRoads, you have to graduate from this place to be sent back home. This place will test you and help you grow. You have certain tasks you need to pass to move on to get to the end. It is not just about building and working on yourself, but also working with others. Though Puck doesn't even care. She will do whatever to be kicked out though when she finally decides to give it a try it may be too late for her. I really loved how Puck grew as a person and it wasn't overnight. She came across as this I don't give a crap about anyone and everything, because everyone will do me wrong. Though as Barb the lady in charge doesn't give up on Puck they make a breakthrough. We learn of Puck's past and in a way it sheds light on why she acts the way she does.
We are also introduced to other kids that are troubled as well. Each has a story that is unique and troubled. Will they graduate out of DreamRoads?

The plot was great, the characters well developed and different in their own way. I plan on reading more from these authors in the future.

Children's Review: Twisted True Tales from Science: Medical Mayhem

Twisted True Tales From Science: Medical Mayhem - Stephanie Bearce

We received this book to give an honest review. So K and I read this book within a week as we just read a few chapters a night. There is a lot of neat information that we never knew before such as bloodletting, which George Washington died from. This lead K to be upset because he read that George Washington died another way and was serious that him dying of bloodletting could not be true, so this lead us to research and find the true answer. What we found was correct that he died of bloodletting as he was very sick. I really loved how K was into learning new things and wasn't in shock from the gross things that we read. We learned about important people who played a huge role in science. He laughed when he learned that people put feces in sores because you aren't suppose to do that. Just seeing his eyes go wide when he learned that doctors cut into people's brains to cure them and the questions being asked. This is a book that I as a parent enjoyed reading to K because we both learned to much. There weren't any pictures minus just the ones that were at the start of each chapter. I think this book would be good for the older kids from 10 on up if they are interested in learning how we have evolved in science.

NetGalley Review: Justice Ascending

Justice Ascending (The Scorpius Syndrome) - Rebecca Zanetti

I received this book via Netgalley to give an honest review.

I have fallen in love with this series. So when I saw this book was available to request I knew I had to see if I would get accept.

OMG we are now in the p.o.v of Tace our handsome Texan with his Texas and Sami the bad-a-- female solider.

We see how Tace fights the darkness within him and you have to wonder will he even make it?

He has always liked Sami so I was excited to see if that was going to ever head somewhere.

Even though I like Sami and Tace as a couple their approach of lusting for each other didn't sit too well with me. The fact they would fight each other and then have hot sex had me shaking my head a bit. Hence the only reason I gave this book a four and not a five. Though I could understand the author's thought process behind it.

We also get to finally see who Sami truly is. Her past will come into play and it will play a big part in finding the bunker that Vanguard is looking for.

As we read in the previous book we know that Vanguard was fighting the president who has scorpius as well, so we shouldn't be too surprised if he plays a role in this one as well right?

Vanguard will team up with their enemy when they get word where the bunker is but who will survive, what will be found, will they get answer, and will our poor Jax finally find his brother who he has been searching for?

So much intensity, action, love and lust is happening within these pages. This is one series that I highly recommend but you need to read from the beginning.

ARC Review: Sink: Once Upon a Time

Sink: Once Upon A Time - Perrin Briar

I received an ARC to give an honest review.

Now the family finds themselves in another part of this mysterious world via the passage they went through. They come across a monster that is determined to eat them, and a town that is from the world above. The town hasn't changed too much since when it was sucked down but there are new things happening within the town. We learn there is an inventor living within the town which the family is curious about. It seems this inventor has a unique way of coming up with ideas.

Now the family is determined to find the passage that they know is within this world, though the royal family has no clue where it is. Brian and his family decide to help rid this town of this monster that terrorizes them only what seems to happen is one a huge secret comes to light and second there is a lot of action involved. The cloak figure shows up yet again and still is a mystery on who this is person is. I have a feeling I might know who it is, but I am sure I am far from being right.

From the beginning of the book you pulled in. The way the author describes the lake to what is in the cave you are left wondering will the family's luck finally run out. I will love how all the passages connect in some way and the characters are well written.

If you haven't been reading this series I highly suggest you do it now. Not only are the covers AMAZING but the story line is pretty darn good!

NetGalley Review: Sarah

Sarah - Teri Polen

I received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review.

So what pulled me to this book was first off the cover, it just screams creepy and PICK ME UP. Second after reading the blurb I knew I needed to see if it was going to be as good as it seemed.

Now if you are easily afraid then this might not be the book for you. If you like a good ghost story with a mystery behind it, then pick this book up.

So this story is told through the p.o.v. being a teenage boy. Cain is a young teenager who has taken up the responsibility of taking care of his sister which I love how he reads to her every night, and his mom. Cain lives in a house where out of the blue his attic door opens and he feels a rush of cold air. Well we all know what that means. Though not only does he need to figure out what is going on with all the creepy stuffy he has a girlfriend who is a big snob. You can just tell that won't last long.

With the help of his best friend Finn he starts looking into why his house maybe haunted and by who. When Cain finds out what exactly happened to Sarah he believes that they have to come clean but will they?

As time goes on it seems that Sarah who is the ghost is getting powerful, maybe even powerful enough to take matters into her own hands. The way she died hands has you going oh man, justice needed to be served.

I have to say that Finn was my favorite character. With this witty humor and willingness to take care of his best friend he was pretty cool in my book.

Not much else I can say on this book except that if you like ghost stories, pick this book up. I think this is a good read for maybe the older teenagers on up. I really like this author's writing that I will be looking for more of her work.

Review: Packs of the Pacific Northwest series

Marked By Werewolves: Packs Of The Pacific Northwest Series, Books 1-3 (BBW Paranormal Werewolf Shapeshifter Romance) (Action and Adventure Wolf Shape Shifter Pregnancy Romance) - Meg Ripley

I received this book to give an honest review.

So I am not sure how to rate this book as I am between a three and a four. At times it really pulled me in and then at other times I was just like oh okay.

We start the book off with Azia who is a bar owner in Portland. When she is attacked because she just won't bend to the Brotherhoods will like everyone else she finds herself in a situation that has her faking her own death. Her lover Dwight seems shady as heck and didn't seem to care too much on calming her sister down when her sister comes into play. Though we are left with a cliffhanger with Azia and Dwight.

Fast Forward Azia's sister Sera who has come looking into this death of her sister, finds out her sister's secret though while doing that she finds herself in the sights of this Brotherhood. When she teams up with Seth we see the sparks fly between them and this leads to a match that well leads us to the title of the second book Werewolf Baby Daddy. Seth is willing to help Sera but he also wants her to be safe. In this novella we also meet his other alpha half Stephanie. A major fight goes down and we don't know who is truly alive until the next story.

In book three Aiza feels bad on how she was brainwashed and is determined to be close to her sister again. Though while helping the werewolf police with their investigation she finds herself being drawn into the man who is protecting her. Will Aiza allow herself to be happy and fall in what seems to be love? Who knows. I really liked book three as everything comes together and of course we got our h.a.e which was good.

Now there were somethings that bothered me with the book.

1. At times it felt just plan rushed with Aiza and what she was dealing with. Not to mention the sudden rush of attraction between Sera and Seth.

2. The author was not on point with descriptions of things. So when Aiza turned her clothes were shredded, then all of a sudden Dwight lifted up her skirt? Wait how did that happen? You got to be on point with simple things.

3. The sex scenes now mind you they were hot but some how Aiza's scenes seemed more hotter than Sera not sure how that happened.

4. Stephanie so I am not sure about her being an alpha. At times she came off as an alpha but then other times she just was willing to jump into the middle of things without thinking what could happen. Especially the scene with Seth on the lookout for Dwight.

5. There were a couple of misspellings of words. Like pavement was payment and look was luck.

If you like werewolves then I suggest you try this book out. You may enjoy it.

Review: When I'm Gone

When I'm Gone: A Novel - Emily Bleeker

So I borrowed this book free with Prime and let me tell you I was very glad I did. Honestly I might not have picked this book up but after reading the blurb I knew I wanted to give the book a try. Man this book gave me the feels on so many levels. We are introduced to Luke who lost his wife and is now having to raise three children on his own. Though what he doesn't expect is to get letters from Natalie. It seems that before Natalie passed away she wrote letters that were to be delivered to him to help him. Though as the letters come he starts wondering who is delivering them and when his son believes himself to be adopted Luke goes on a mission to prove to his son that he wasn't. Though it seems another secret might come to light one that has something to with Luke. As Luke is trying to uncover what secret Natalie had he also is becoming friends with her best friend, and she has her own problems going on at home. One that hits too close to home for Luke. When everything comes out I can honestly say I did not see that coming at all. I was left with my mouth opened. I really loved the idea of Natalie writing these letters to her husband and the one letter telling him how to cook the pancakes melted my heart. I really loved this author's work that I believe I will be reading her work again!

Update for book challenge from last year

So I totally didn't make my goal of 350 books. In 2015 I did that with no problem so I figured I had to beat it this time right? Well no I sadly did not so this year the goal will be simple of 200 books. If I go over I go over if not hey then maybe I will award myself with some chocolates. So did any of you make your goal last year if you gave yourself one? Anything new you will be trying this year with books? I think I am going to try my hand at getting through certain lists in my collections. For example read all the A books no matter if it looks good or not. That way I can see if I can make a dent in my reading pile, you know that one that last forever. Yet I keep adding more and more to my list. I will still be reviewing books from authors but most of the books will be from my A-Z challenge I am giving myself. I wonder how far I will make it in the alphabet or if I will even get through it all.

Review: The Rules of Restraint

The Rules of Restraint - David Wilson
http://fallenoverbookreviews.blogspot...

I received this book to give an honest review.

So I would have given this book a five star rating hands down. It was well written but aside from it being well written at times I felt confused as to whose p.o.v. I was in. So I dropped it to a four.
Though it all started to make sense towards the end.

With this story a prison called Greenbank is handling its prison differently. Trying more of a therapeutic way of trying to help the prisoners. That is until a new governor takes over and then things start going down hill. Prisoners are being murdered and one of them has escaped. What the heck is going on?

As the story goes on we learn that there is a reason this serial killer escaped as it was all part a plan that someone has put together. We meet Dr. Kate Crowther who is the prison psychologist and may have an insight on what is going through the prisoners head. When she joins D.I. Nick Knight and Governor Munro on a profile of who is behind it all, it is a surprise. Munro is dealing with a lot going on. His prison has been turned upside down and to make matters worse his daughter is missing and with the serial killer out there he is super worried. Could she be his next victim? It is a race against time to find her and that is when everything starts to make sense.
I can honestly say I wasn't expecting that turn of events towards the end but it was good how it all was wrapped up.
Now the pace was a bit slow at first but once we see Knight and Crowther start trying to figure out who is behind it all, everything started going to a steady pace.

Review: A Mother Scorned

A Mother Scorned and Other Stories - Michele Bardsley

So I actually just picked up this book from a site called Instafreebie. Though there was no blurb to it, the cover and titled called out to me to read it. This review is only for this story. I can not find this story just by itself. I have not read the other stories that are in the collection.

I was surprised this book went the way it did. For a short story it was crazy but complete. Josie is a single mother to Maggie. She is doing well on her own though her daughter is attached to this bear she calls Teddy. Josie believes it is a reminder of her dad Ted. When this bear gets destroyed by accident it is like a healing for both Maggie and Josie because well Ted left them for some other woman. Josie is trying to heal by doing things in her garden but memories creep up on her. As the story progresses we get a feel that something tragic happened and the real reason Ted is no longer in the home. I don't want to give anything away but once everything clicked into place I was left with the OMG moment. The story is easy to follow along very short and to the point.

Review: Set In the Woods

Set in the Woods - Lacey Crowe

I received this book to give an honest review.

So if I was to judge a book by its cover I probably wouldn't have picked up the book. The cover doesn't appeal to me.

Now if I went off what the book was about I would have picked it up no problem.

This is one of those books that when the twist hits you are like WHAT? It was the kind of twist I was not expecting it to go. We start the book of with Lionel in the woods with someone running away. Okay sounds creepy and I believe I know where this story is going. Then we switch to Jordan who is a teenager who is trying to make it on his own with his girlfriend. I felt a bit sorry for Jordan. So when he sees a job opening for a movie being made he decides to go for it. This has him introduced to Lionel. Now the whole scene with Jordan and Lionel had me disturbed and going okay what does Lionel have planned. Then the twist comes and we see how everything works out. For a short story this book was on point. The ending had me living my mouth wide opened.

If you have not read this author's other work I suggest you jump on it.

Children's Review: The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm

The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm by LeVar Burton (2014-10-07) - LeVar Burton; Susan Schaefer Bernardo;

She is 4 and didn't understand the message that was within the story she just thought it was sad that a storm got rid of everything and that Rhino was in a hole. Then she liked how she got to see a lot of different animals in a circle at the end and laughed when he sat on a tortoise which gave great wisdom.

For this story this is a storm outside that Mica the mouse is scared of and it is because her home was destroyed. Her papa tells her the story of the rhino who swallowed a storm after his own home was gone and how he coped it with it all. He needed his friends to help him understand he doesn't have to keep things bottled up inside. He should talk about what is bothering him.

The book does rhyme and the pictures are pretty good.

I think this is a good book for children to read and maybe understand the message that is being told.

Children's Review: Splat the Cat: The Name of the Game

By Rob Scotton Splat the Cat: The Name of the Game (I Can Read Book 1) (Paperback) June 19, 2012 - Rob Scotton

A and K really liked to have this book read to them via the option of "read to me."

A did not like how Splat's little sister said "so sad, too bad. You lost the game!" She was very upset that she would say something mean to her brother. Which lead to me explaining that sometimes things that are said is not nice and maybe she shouldn't have said that. What could she said instead.

Splat and his friends are playing hide and seek and Splat wonders why he never wins. He decided he doesn't want to play with his friend anymore and will play by himself. Though he then realizes that playing by himself isn't all the fun. So he finds his friends and this time he finds a good place to hide. While reading this book Splat reminds me of K and how he acts when he doesn't win at something. I always have to remind him, it is a game and you are meant to have fun. As both kids enjoyed Splat the Cat I think we will be reading more.
